How do I start?
Your child will always think you are a wonderful reader. Try these tips when reading together:
- Turn off the TV or radio. Your child is young and easily distracted.
- Place your child on your knee or have them sitting close
- Reading is a great time for a cuddle and they should be able to easily see and touch the book.
- Involve your child. Let them often choose the books to read.
- Read with fun in your voice. Use lots of expression and different silly voices. Your child will love it!
- Read slowly and clearly.
- At times include props, such as a puppet or favorite toy.
- Don’t just read the words. Discuss what’s happening in the book, point out things on the page and ask questions.
- Read it again and again! Children love predictability and repetition. Be prepared to read a favorite book for the 100th time.
- Know when to stop. Reading should be fun and a young child’s concentration is limited. If your child loses interest be prepared to put the book away. A little and often is often best.
- Keep a book in your baby bag. A story can be a ‘life saver’ on a long journey or when waiting for an appointment.
- Talk about how much you enjoy reading and your storytime together.
